Today's portables really take a lot of power. Scanners typically come with 2000mah rechargeable batteries, or less. That's why these new 2900mah batteries may just add a few more hours to your listening. I haven't tried these yet (I have their 2400mah), but at least one person reported they lasted longer than alkalines: Thomas Distributing 2900mah batteries. I also have their Charger , which is pretty good if you want to to charge an an extra set while your scanner is in use. Radio Shack has 2700mah batteries, which should be almost as good.

I replaced all of the AA batteries in my scanners with Nickel Metal Hydride (NIMH) rechargeables. I used to have Nickel cadmium (NI-CD) batteries in all of them. The Nickel Metal Hydride ones seem to last twice as long as the old NI-CD batteries. They are a little bit more in cost , but it seemed worth it. An example on performance: Every year we go to POCONO Raceway to the NASCAR June Event. Usually i have the scanner on several hours before and after the race. ( 6-8 hours of use) With the old NI-CD batteries i had the low battery indicator come on several times after about 6 hours of use. With the NIMH batteries i used my scanner all day long and forgot to turn it off and late the next day it was still working.

What is the average life of Nickel metal Hydride rechargeable Batteries? I have had mine since 2004 and my scanner was dead the other day when i went to use it. It was hooked up to the power plug all the time. I replace the batteries with a new set and have had no problem. The old ones won't seem to take a charge anymore so i'm assuming that they must be no longer any good.
