:)I have been hearing new activity on the following frequencies. 170.3625,and 170.9625. It appears to be a digital signal and is very active in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. My guess is that it is the new digital FBI frequencies. The old FBI frequencies are all analog and are all silent.

My guess is that it is the new digital FBI frequencies. The old FBI frequencies are all analog and are all silent. I confirm 170.9625., but I was told that 170.3625 Rptr (input 162.1625) was a new Steamtown Park Rangers freq by someone that was there. It is not a typical FBI Freq, Both of them are digital and encrypted, but I do hear an occasional transmission on 170.9625 in the clear (I have a digital scanner) which sounded like FBI. While we are on the subject, - 167.3125 heard a radio check with Haz & Allentown in the clear once, but nothing for a couple of weeks. This is a typical FBI channel
- 167.3000, 167.4875 and 167.5600 seem to be sometimes active when 170.9625 is also, but it does not appear to be P25 digital...more like data. If you don't get anything for a while, that tells me they are probably Allentown, which is possible from my location.
- 418.9000 is probably P25 digital DEA . I have heard several com's from helicopters in the clear, but it is usually encrypted.
None of these seem to be repeaters. Thanks for letting us know about this, as I have been working on this for a few weeks as well. I don't get the 170.3625 very well, so you might have a better chance. You could see if the signal gets stronger in the vicinity of Steamtown.

Thank you very much for your response. I will check it and see if it is the Steamtown site. If you have an updated federal frequency list for our area I would greatly appreciate it as I have lost mine in a a fire. l was told today that the signal I have been hearing is Motorola's digital voice format (known as ASTRO). Quite common on the Fed band these days. not for sure however. I will start compiling a list and will publish it in a few weeks. Thanks

170.3625 Rptr (input 162.1625) is The Steam Town Park Rangers out of Scranton. Was by their yesterday and my portable was recieving a full signal when they were chatting. 170.9625 however, is still unknown but seems to be a digital signal possibly Astro. And again, anyone with any federal Frequencies for Lackawanna/luzerne counties please post. Thanks.

An update on the FBI freq's
167.3125 is very strong, so Xmitter probably on Mtop. 167.1750 & 167.4875 are Allentown. However, ALL 3 typically transmit together, so probably simulcast link from Philly.
I have heard them broadcast briefly "in the clear" on all three, but I don't get any P25 indication on the scanner when they do. Most of the time it just sounds like data, and not P25. Probably just encryption on std VHF FM. As noted before, activity on 170.9375 P25 often results in data traffic on all or sometimes just one of the 3 above.

I was thinking about buying a Digital Scanner for X-Mas. I live in Lackawanna County. Does anyone know if it is worth it. I believe that local, county, and federal are all still analog. Is there any activity in this area that is digital? Thanks and Happy Holidays!!

Is there any activity in this area that is digital? Thanks and Happy Holidays!! Nothing now, nor anything planned that I know of. All of the Fed stuff is encrypted, so no reason there either. DCNR is planning a new system, but there is no indication it will be P25. Wait until there is something in place. Scanners improved every year in features and types of new systems that can be monitored. It takes a lot of time and money(not easy to get these days) to convert to digital, so we should have plenty of warning, and it will be posted here.

Thanks for the input. I have been hearing a lot of activity on 167.5625 and again on 170.9375. It appears to be using DES encryption most of the time. I believe it is the FBI but not certain as of yet.

captclint what kind of scanner do you have BC796D & BC346XT. I got the 796 because it was rebandable and had alpha tags, but I did hear some "data" on my BC250(now retired) that I thought might be digital. Turns out it was just data, but I really wanted the Alpha tags, and 796 was the only way to get it at the time. I knew the Feds were encrypted, so I didn't even bother to notice they had changed frequencies from the old easily monitored and lame "codes" days.
