Ok, my first handheld was a Bearcat-70xlt 20 cahnnel handheld scanner with frequency read out. Nice scanner. By mistake I left it on top of the car and plud away it got crushed by a on comming car. Only good thing about that happening is my first wife being as sweet as she was, went out and got me my bearcat-100xlt 100channel scanner. I still have it. needs a new batt.pack.
As for a base scanner I had the bearcat 140 10 channels. And then got a refirb bearcat 210xlt. 40 channel scanner which I still have and use.

Long before scanners, this is what I used to monitor the Fire &Police frequencies. The Lafayette PF-60 was a tunable High band receiver, with a socket for 1 crystal inside (if you look at the pic,the 4th knob over you could choose the crystal,or to tune the freq.you wanted to hear) and BTW,there wasn't any UHF frequencies at that time and better yet,NO OPEN SKY,ah yes, those were the day's

I picked it up at the flea market last year. It works. It is a Toshiba solid state RL-504F 4 band radio.

My neighbors had an old 10 ch. crystal scanner and i got hooked from listening to it. My parents bought me a Bearcat 145Xl 16 ch for christmas in 1987 which at that time i thought was the "crown jewel" of scanners. That old radio lasted me till 1998 when i replaced it with a Radio Shack Pro20-44 80 ch. I wore that old 16 ch out.
